Mauritius: Fact File.

History: Discovered by the Dutch and named after Prince Maurice of Nassau, Mauritius was owned by France and then Britain before gaining independence in 1968. It became a republic in 1992.

The capital: Port Louis is named after King Louis XV of France and is situated in the north-west of the island. The city is best-known for its Caudan Waterfront, which bustles with restaurants, bars and shops. Other key attractions include the Central Market, Chinatown and the Champ de Mars Racecourse – the second oldest in the world.

People and culture: Mauritius is a cosmopolitan island state, with 1.25 million inhabitants of Indian, Creole, African, Chinese and European descent who are united – to quote the national anthem – as “one people… one nation, in peace, justice and liberty”.

Official language: The island is still part of the British Commonwealth and English is the official language, although French and Creole are widely spoken.

Climate: Mauritius is a year-round destination with coastal temperatures averaging between 22°C in Winter (British Summer) and 33°C in the Summer (British Winter). As is the case with other islands in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius may be subject to cyclones between December and April. However, cyclonic activity has been mild in recent years.

Health: No vaccinations are required to enter Mauritius. However, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers who arrive from areas where Yellow Fever cases have been reported.

Currency: The monetary unit is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs), which is divided into 100 Cents (Cs). Credit cards are normally accepted by banks and most hotels, restaurants and tourist shops. Cash points are also available all over the island.

Great holiday for the first time in Mauritius. Hopefully not the last. I wish we had ventured out more to be honest, people are really friendly. Our room was very well maintained. One can see that it is not the newest hotel, but it was comfortable and clean. The equipment is very good, generous, big new flat screen TV’s and comfortable beds. Great shower in the bathroom. The gardens at The Le Meridien are gorgeous and we met some animals I have seen before?!. We went All Inclusive but if you are B&B or Half Board there is a supermarket practically next door which has almost everything.

Pointe aux Biches has a great location right on the beach. The hotel consists of several small buildings scattered in a large, verdant garden. Next to the beach you will find the pool area with sun terrace, bar and a restaurant. In addition, there is another newly built swimming pool area and restaurant. The All Inclusive at Pointe aux Biches includes kayaks and pedaloes while diving is available but payable locally.

For the young in the family is both a separate children’s pool, “Timomo” – an international children’s club (up to eleven years old) and playground.

Pointe aux Biches Review

The Veranda Pointe aux Biches is a three star all inclusive resort in Mauritius minutes away from the busy town of Grand Baie. It is an ideal choice for those who want a back to the tropics retreat on a budget – both families and adults wanting a quiet break.
The main feature of this hotel is the relaxed “barefoot experience”. Most of the resort is as natural as possible with bars and other areas covered in sand and styled with natural décor and furnishings.
The resort has 115 rooms so is a typically smaller and more intimate resort than most. Standard rooms have one king size bed and sleep two adults whereas family rooms have an additional bunk bed and sleep two adults and two children all neutrally decorated. All rooms have a balcony or terrace so you can enjoy waking up to the ocean breeze and sunrises. The rooms come with standard facilities such as television, shower, telephone, mini bar and hairdryer.

The Le Touessrok Resort is a beach front resort overlooking Trou d’eau Douce Bay in Mauritius. The five star resort was recently refurbished with pure luxury and indulgence in mind and you can see this through the carefully planned modern décor, a range of unique cuisine at the selection of restaurants and bars and the designer spa. “Hotel Shandrani is on a huge area. The Family room was good, with separate bedrooms with bathrooms. Small balcony. Safe and dressing room. We went with our two young children, but the room seemed to be for even smaller children (small beds). Their bathroom was not as fresh as ours, so they showered with us.
We had total all inclusive at The Shandrani, which means that everything included, – recommended! Located near the airport, but nothing that disturbed us and enjoyed the short transfers. The hotel offers everything for everyone! Spa, hairdresser, several beaches to choose from with sunbeds. Play tennis, etc.. Boutique with clothes and one with souvenirs. The staff were very nice and service minded. The food in buffet restaurant has a wide selection with different themes on different days. Gluten free diet was no problem. The seafood restaurant did not accept children, but next door was the buffet restaurant so we could easily eat separately with no worries. Sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, at various beaches. A car travels around offering refreshments such as beer, soft drinks, water and snacks.

The best excursion was when we rented a speedboat and driver. We took a complimentary lunch basket from the hotel and drove away. They took us to various places inc. an uninhabited island, where we were eating our lunch, a nature reserve with birds and the waterfall. There were some local people we met (do not forget to give them tips when they do not belong to the hotel). We were escorted and it felt safe to jump ashore and explore with the local guide. Swim in fresh water from the jungle, getting back massage from the waterfall, hanging vines, etc. Ask the excursion seller to book a driver who speaks English! We could easily communicate with our driver and he told me about all the places. An experience!
We very much enjoyed at this resort as a family it is so great we would all love to go back.”
